Goeran Persson (born 20 January, 1949) is a Swedish politician. He is the current Prime Minister of Sweden (since March 1996) and the leader of the Social Democratic Party.

Persson was born in Vingaker. He has a background as a city council politician in the small municipality of Katrineholm, where he was the head of the municipal government or kommunalrad. In 1989 he was made Minister of Schools, until the election in 1991 when the Social Democrats were voted out of office. Upon returning to government in 1994 he was made Minister of Finance, a post he held until 1996, when he succeeded Ingvar Carlsson as Prime Minister and party leader.

Married to Anitra Steen since December 6, 2003. Formerly married to Annika Persson, from March 10, 1995 to December 2002.
